As a therapist, I can undoubtedly say there are so many people who want the help of therapy but don’t have the financial means or counseling resources to access this treatment. I would love for there to be more affordable options and mental health care reform in this country. Countless people suffer with little hope for help. Believe me when I say I have been there on the other side of the therapy chair.
My personal story:
I was diagnosed with a pretty serious mental health issue of my own in my late teens and early 20s. I was struggling so badly that I was desperate for help! There were days where no joke - I couldn’t get out of bed. I would have gone to the moon and back for relief. This is one of the main drives that propelled me to become a therapist but also to create a solution for those who want the help but don’t have the means to access it. I don’t want you to wait or have to search years for tools that could be readily available to you. This is personal for me and I want to see others thrive and lead healthy lives like I am doing now!
I am going to cover 3 essential therapy tools that are covered in my e-course. You definitely will want to write these down in your journal!
1. Self help is real help!
2. Relax the body, relax the mind!
3. Write your goal down or it won’t happen!
1. Self help is real help!
A huge motivating factor for me to create an e-course full of information, techniques, and skills that I have learned throughout my 15 year experience in the clinical field was that I wanted to pass along the value to people that I knew weren’t likely or able to attend traditional counseling. Even if you are in counseling, this e-course is designed to assist you with having a guide to support and use essential skills in your daily life. Therapy and counseling are a wonderful resource that I know many people need to attend and I encourage people to remain in therapy and work with their provider until they are successful with their goals. However many individuals don’t have the access, means, or desire to attend traditional counseling. This is an alternative solution to give resources and help for those struggling with their mental health or relationships and want to change. This is not therapy which might just be perfect for you. Ask yourself and journal: what kind of help do I need/want in my life to create wellness?
2. Relax the body, relax the mind!
The amazing thing that you will learn about in my e-course which is covered in our module series on anxiety, is the vitality of relaxing our bodies. The brain and body are so connected that our brains honestly don’t know when we are in a treat unless we teach our bodies that we are not in a threat. One way to do that is noticing when our bodies are tense and relaxing that part of your body. I encourage you to get in tune with your physical sensations and parts of your body where you feel anxious. If you want to learn more check out our anxiety module chalked full of body relaxation techniques, mindfulness practices, and more valuable tools! Ask yourself and journal: where do I feel tension or anxiety in my body?
3. Write your goal down or it won’t happen!
You have to write your goal or it’s likely not going to happen. It’s just reality which brings me to a concept that I like to work with people when creating goals. It’s called outer space vs a down to earth goal. You have to have your goal rooted in something that will allow you to know where you are headed and what your end destination is aiming towards. It doesn’t mean you have to have it all figured out by any means. Take example of working. You can say “I’m going to start working out” but that is WAY up there in outer space. It doesn’t means much. Bring it down to earth by saying something like “I’m going to go to the gym 3x this week on MWF.” It’s makes it more concrete and approachable. Ask yourself and journal: What is a goal that I have that I could bring from outer space down to earth? Now try writing it out.
