Let me tell you about self sabotage. I’m an expert. Not because I’m a mental health clinician, but because I’ve done it to myself plenty of times. I would get stuck in the loop of making changes, getting scared, and retreating back to the same old negative behavior. 1. Define Self Sabotage

Are you tired of doing the same thing over and over and seeing no change? You’ve taken steps and made some changes but just can’t seem to get there. You’ve had setbacks and eventually threw in the towel. How many of you know what I’m talking about? Well, there is a really easy explanation to this phenomenon that so many experience. It is called self sabotage. You may already know that but how do you fix it? First you have to realize that your brain, in so many ways, is geared to protect you and that comes in the form of self sabotage. You may think that sounds paradoxical that your brain would sabotage you to protect you but believe me the brain will do almost anything to protect you if it senses there is a threat.

I’ve learned the simple secrets to change self sabotage to where I’m thriving and overcoming challenge I didn’t think was possible. That’s right, I went from harming my progress to supporting my desire to grow and I’ve actually changed. 3. What Is Going On In The Brain Of Self Sabotage

The amygdala is a small almond size piece of the brain that controls the fight, flight or freeze response. It’s our internal defense mechanism that helps us when we are under a threat. The amygdala also has to do with our emotional processing, memory formation, and survival instincts. If the brain senses something out of routine then the amygdala will signal doubt, dread, anxiety, or worthlessness. How many of those who self sabotage experience these emotions? The brain doesn’t like change because it’s unpredictable. You have to teach the brain that you can do things out of routine and make changes and that doesn’t mean you are under a threat.

You see, change is always viewed as a threat in the mind of the brain. I need to get this tattooed on my forehead to remind myself and others of the value of this saying. If your brain senses there is something out of routine or identifies a change taking place, then it will send signals to immediately stop or resist that change. It may come in the way of negative thinking patterns, procrastination or avoidance. The brain also has another fascinating structure that gets stronger when used overtime. This structure helps to fight self sabotage and actually lowers anxiety and builds resilience. Change is possible.
