There was a time when I was working a full time job on top of a part time job on the weekend and going to grad school in the evening. To say I was stressed would be an understatement.
In this blog, I’m sharing the self care essentials and routines that helped me and the countless clients I have worked with overcome anxiety for good. I know these will help you too!

How I Overcame Anxiety And So Can You
When I say I have experienced my fair share of stress, I absolutely mean it. I’ve been a mental health professional for over 10 years and have worked with over hundreds of clients. I have loved it for many reasons but I’ve also been on the other side of the chair. I’ve been the client.
I was in my mid 20s and working a full time job during the day, a part time job on the weekend, and going to grad school in the evening. I was exhausted and it felt like my anxiety was eating me alive. At one point in my 20s, I was actually assessed for hospitalization because my mental health was deteriorating before my eyes. One day “I remember hearing a phrase that would change my life, “anxiety is not the bad guy that it’s made out to be.” From there I went on a journey to learn that anxiety is designed to protect us during a threat but we have to teach our brains when we are safe in order to shut anxiety off. This is exactly what I did. I went from anxious all the time to a life where I’m thriving. My life is soooooo much better than it was. I’m actually happy and whole. Instead of anxiety managing me, I manage anxiety. I am so thankful for the tools and skills that I want to share with you.

What Anxiety Is and Its Purpose
Anxiety is not the bad guy it’s made out to be. Now don’t get me wrong, anxiety can kick butt sometimes. Like I said, I’ve experienced my fair share. Anxiety though, is actually a necessary component of life for survival. Imagine for a moment if you were completely fearless. You’d jump into any problem and go for it. You would take on any uncharted territory without a worry in the world. You’d take big leaps and not look back. You would also probably get yourself killed in the process or at the very least hurt, broke, and/or depressed.
Anxiety actually is part of the brain’s way of keeping us safe. Our brains love us much more than we love ourselves sometimes. I know it doesn’t always feel like that, but the brain has a natural defense system built in to keep us from danger. It’s called our autonomic nervous system (ANS) or our fight, flight, and freeze response. If we are in danger then part of our ANS called the sympathetic nervous system sends physical signs of distress in our body to propel us to action to fight our threat or run away from it. Anxiety is the precursor of this threat response that signals to our mind and body that we are in danger. It’s a blessed thing when we are actually in danger. If I am running in my neighborhood and am going to cross the street, I’m going to want to look for cars. It’s my ANS that sends signals of anxiety that something could harm me so I better watch out. It has saved me countless times from getting hit by a car and seriously injured.
How to Shut Anxiety Off
But…what about when there isn’t a threat and anxiety seems to be on the run itself. What about the everyday stressors of life that come with work, navigating a career, or putting up with the demands of the 9-5 grind? Well there is another part of the autonomic nervous system where our mind is supposed to live most of the time. We have to teach our brain how to activate this part in order to live free, healthy, and safe, while keeping anxiety in a well maintained place. I discovered how to shut anxiety off for good by using this part of the brain and so can you. My work stress has done a 99% turn around and so can yours!
